Wizz Air receives approval to operate flights between the U.K. and the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has granted Wizz Air’s British subsidiary approval to operate passenger flights between the United Kingdom and the United States. The authorization covers both scheduled and charter services.

Approval for transatlantic operations

U.S. regulators approved an application from Wizz Air UK, the airline’s U.K.-based unit headquartered at London Luton Airport. The permit allows the carrier to operate transatlantic flights between the United Kingdom and the United States.

Despite receiving the authorization, the airline does not plan to launch regular services in the near term. The company said the main purpose of the approval is to enable charter operations.

Charter flights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Some of the flights could be used to transport fans and sports teams to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament will take place across North America, with many matches scheduled in the United States.

Charter flights may also be used for group travel, tour operators, and corporate trips.

Aircraft for long-haul routes

Wizz Air UK plans to use Airbus A321XLR aircraft for transatlantic flights. The airline currently operates three of the long-range jets and expects to receive another in the near future.

  • Range capable of operating transatlantic flights
  • Single-class cabin with 239 seats
  • Part of the Airbus A321neo family

These aircraft are currently used on longer routes from London to cities in Saudi Arabia. The new U.S. authorization expands the airline’s ability to operate charter services on long-haul routes.
