Southwest Becomes First U.S. Airline to Bring Flight Shopping to ChatGPT

Southwest Airlines has launched a ChatGPT plugin that lets travelers search for flights, compare fares and refine itineraries without first going to the airline’s website. The service launched on October 6, 2026.

Travelers describe their trip in plain language and get Southwest flight options inside ChatGPT. They can change travel dates, filter by departure time and limit results to nonstop flights. The tool shows Southwest’s four fare categories: Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred and Choice Extra.

Customers can compare what each fare includes and see how many Rapid Rewards points a cash ticket earns. Southwest says the launch reflects how people increasingly plan trips, and that it wants to be part of that process earlier.

Booking Still Takes Place on Southwest.com

The entire booking can’t be completed in the chat. After picking a flight, travelers are sent to southwest.com where they enter passenger and payment details and finish the reservation.

The tool supports cash fares only. Travelers can’t search for or book flights with Rapid Rewards points, and the tool doesn’t connect to a logged-in Rapid Rewards account.

Bookings for children ages 5 to 17 traveling alone are also not supported and must be made through Southwest’s existing booking channels.

First Step in a Larger AI Plan With OpenAI and AWS

Southwest calls the ChatGPT launch the first phase of an AI strategy it is developing with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services. The airline is also working with AWS on a cloud-based, AI-enabled technology architecture that is expected to be in place by 2028.

Southwest is not the first airline to offer flight shopping through ChatGPT. Virgin Atlantic launched a similar experience in April 2026, letting travelers browse flights in ChatGPT before completing the booking on its website.
