Airbnb will prohibit hosts from requiring guests to perform checkout cleaning, including washing dishes, stripping beds and taking trash outside the property, under updated rules taking effect on November 20, 2026.
Which Cleaning Requirements Will Be Banned
Under Airbnb’s updated policy, hosts will no longer be allowed to assign guests cleaning tasks that take significant time or effort or would normally be handled by a professional cleaner. The restrictions cover washing dishes, removing used bed linens and taking garbage outside the accommodation.
Simple checkout requests will still be permitted. Hosts may ask guests to leave dishes in the sink, gather used towels or sort waste into designated bins.
House Rules Must Be Disclosed Before Booking
Hosts must list all mandatory requirements in their property descriptions before guests make a reservation. Once a booking is confirmed, they cannot introduce additional rules through messages, verbal instructions or signs inside the accommodation.
Airbnb recognizes seven standard categories of house rules covering guest numbers, quiet hours, events, pets, smoking, commercial photography and securing the property at checkout. Hosts may also set other reasonable requirements, provided they do not conflict with the platform’s policies.
Cleaning Fees and Guest Responsibility
The new rules do not eliminate cleaning fees or make guests exempt from responsibility for the condition of a property. Guests must still follow house rules and avoid damaging the accommodation. Hosts may continue to raise claims for additional cleaning costs caused by excessive mess.
Hosts who violate the updated policy may face action from Airbnb, including warnings and restrictions on their listings. The new rules will apply to reservations made on or after November 20, 2026.
