Qantas Unveils First Ultra-Long-Range Airbus A350 for Nonstop Flights

Qantas has taken delivery of its first Airbus A350-1000ULR, designed to operate ultra-long-haul flights lasting more than 20 hours.

Aircraft for nonstop intercontinental routes

The first aircraft under Project Sunrise was assembled at Airbus’ facility in Toulouse, France. It is built to fly nonstop between Australia and major global cities, including London and New York.

The aircraft’s range reaches up to 22 hours, enabling nonstop routes that bypass traditional transit hubs, including the Middle East and restricted airspace areas.

Testing and service entry

Following assembly, the aircraft will undergo a two-month flight testing program in France. The tests will evaluate performance, including the operation of enlarged additional fuel tanks.

Commercial service is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with initial routes planned from Sydney to London and New York.

Fewer seats and new onboard features

The aircraft will be configured with 238 seats, significantly fewer than standard versions. The extra space is used to enhance passenger comfort and accommodate additional fuel.

  • range — over 20 hours
  • capacity — 238 passengers
  • larger additional fuel tank
  • estimated fare increase — about 30%

The cabin will include dedicated stretching areas, upgraded premium seating, and improved service spaces. The concept is designed for extended time onboard.

Shifting long-haul travel

The project aims to reduce the need for connections and reliance on transit hubs. This approach can lower the risk of delays and simplify journeys for passengers.

Qantas expects demand for nonstop long-haul flights to grow despite higher fares. The new aircraft could reshape how intercontinental travel is organized.
